Can You Fit Curtains in an L-Shaped Window?
This entry was posted 18/02/2026

L-shaped windows can leave even confident homeowners feeling unsure about their options. When a window turns a corner, standard straight curtain poles suddenly don’t make sense, and it’s easy to assume that vertical blinds are the only workable solution. But that isn’t always the case.
Recently, a customer contacted us after spending time trying to work out how to fit curtains in an L-shaped window. As they put it, the window had completely “bamboozled” them. They were convinced blinds might be the only answer — but they really wanted curtains.
Here’s how we helped clarify the solution.
The First Question: Recessed or Ceiling Mounted?
The customer had initially found the Silent Gliss 6243. However, this is a recessed track, which means it must be installed flush into the ceiling. That requires channeling out the plasterboard so the track can sit inside it. For many homes, that level of alteration simply isn’t practical. In this case, what was actually needed was a ceiling-mounted track that fixes directly onto the ceiling surface without structural work.
Two suitable options were identified:
Both systems can be ceiling fixed and professionally bent to follow an L-shaped layout.
The Key to Making It Work: Professional Bending
The customer mentioned they had even considered joining two straight sections together. This is a common thought process, but joining tracks rarely gives a smooth result around a corner. Curtain movement can catch or feel uneven. Instead, for an L-shaped window, the track needs to be manufactured as a single, continuous piece.
- With a made-to-measure system:
- The track is bent to the exact required shape
- It is manufactured in one piece
- It arrives already formed
- It is protected in packaging to maintain its shape during delivery
- This ensures smooth curtain movement around the corner.
- Measuring an L-Shaped Window Correctly
Once the right type of track was identified, the next step was measurement.
For a single bend bay (right-hand or left-hand), three measurements are required:
- A–B (shorter return)
- B–C (longer section)
- The cross measurement (C–A)
The cross measurement is essential. Without it, the angle of the bend cannot be accurately manufactured.
The system then calculates the total track length automatically once those dimensions are entered.
Customers can either:
- Provide the exact size they want the track made to, or
- Provide wall measurements and specify how far in front the track should sit
Selecting the correct fixing position (ceiling mounted in this case) is also important during configuration.
Choosing the Right Gliders
Another common area of uncertainty is glider type. The customer was concerned about durability and asked about the nylon gliders supplied with the system. These gliders are designed to be silent in operation, metal alternatives would create noise, and are described as robust and long-lasting.
When selecting gliders, the options include:
- Standard gliders (suitable for light to medium weight curtains)
- Roller gliders (recommended for heavier curtains, such as blackout or floor-length styles)
- Wave gliders (required for wave curtains)
In this situation, roller gliders were considered the safest choice to accommodate heavier fabrics.
Wave curtains were also discussed, but these are supplied as a complete system and represent a premium option. Standard or roller gliders allow you to source curtains separately in pencil pleat or pinch pleat headings if preferred.
A Practical Solution for a Challenging Window
What initially felt like a complicated window layout became straightforward once the correct track type, fixing method and measurements were clarified. An L-shaped window does not automatically mean you have to choose blinds. With the correct ceiling-mounted, professionally bent track and accurate measurements, curtains can work beautifully, even around corners.
If you’re unsure which configuration suits your window, taking a few minutes to think about:
- Fixing position
- Window shape (left or right bend)
- All three required measurements
Establishing these three points will enable to you decide exactly what track you need for your L-shaped window.
