Curtain poles and tracks both have their benefits and different reasons why people opt for them. We have put together a handy guide to help you choose and select the best option for your home.

Should I choose a pole or a track?

Curtain poles are a more traditional choice. With multiple hanging options, various choice of rings and gliders and the option for eyelet curtains, they are very versatile. A similar option to eyelet is wave curtains – offering a similar finished result but more advanced design and functionality. However, do bear in mind that eyelets are not ideal for bay windows as the rings will struggle to pass by the brackets.

Accessorise with different coloured finials, midials and holdbacks if you are looking to make more of a statement. You can also choose a diameter depending on whether you want a bold or minimal appearance.

On the other hand, curtain tracks offer a more discreet, minimal appearance, bending at a tighter radius so ideal for small spaces or awkward angles. Tracks are more versatile as they are suitable for any type of fixing, whereas poles with rings can be more limiting; not ideal for top fixing.

With smoother running than poles, due to roller gliders, curtain tracks can be the best option for ease and practicality when drawing your curtains. An exception is our metropole, advanced technology means that it has the appearance of a pole with the functionality of a track.

What do I need to set up my pole or track?

It is recommended to use ten rings per metre when purchasing a curtain pole with rings. If opting for a pole with gliders, you will need to choose a suitable glider type when you come to purchase your pole. However, glider poles only work with curtains with hooks.

If you have a bay window, you may require a custom bent pole with c-rings and passing brackets to allow for smooth drawing of your curtains.

Which type of curtain pole is best for me?

There are three types of curtain poles, offering slightly different functions and aesthetics. The most traditional being poles with rings. Ideal if you are looking for a classic style and for your curtains to be drawn by hand. The addition of draw rods can make this option more practical.

For smoother operation, poles with gliders is a great choice. Uncorded or corded, they work better with heavier curtains.

A more contemporary option and easy to operate, electric models offer a simplistic style and can be operated by remote, switch, radio or timer.

Corded or uncorded poles?

Delicate fabrics are at risk of being damaged if handled, therefore, corded poles and tracks can be better for this type of material. When aiming for a more contemporary styles, uncorded designs are more subtle and keep the curtains as the main attraction.

What are the benefits or electric models?

Operate by either remote, switch, radio or timer, electric models are extremely practical as well as offering a modern appearance. Electric poles allow the pole design to come through whereas electric tracks are more subtle meaning more focus is on the curtains.

With minimal effort required, electric model curtain poles and tracks make your life a lot easier whilst still offering a stylish aesthetic to your home. There is even the option to add a timer or light sensor, so that your curtains will open and close when you are not there. This style will also mean your curtains last longer as the fabric is being handled less.

Size and Fit

How can I get the correct length pole or track?

Be sure to follow our separate guide when measuring and ordering your curtain poles or tracks.

The way this is done depends on the shape of the window you are measuring. Bay windows, for example, have multiple angles and can be awkward, so would be measured differently to a standard, square window.
Allow 15-30cm either side for straight windows that aren’t in recess. Also, consider the length that accessories such as finials may add.

Which diameter curtain pole should I choose?

The diameter selected depends on how prominent you would like the pole to appear. For tall windows, a larger diameter is better suited. On the other hand, more delicate fabrics work well with smaller diameters. With eyelet curtains, it is important to choose a diameter that will fit into the eyelets and allow room for the curtain to easily be pulled along the pole.
Although important to the functioning of the curtain, pole diameter does not determine strength.

What options are available for bay windows?

With our bespoke, made to measure service, as long as you provide us with the correct measurements, we can bend your chosen pole or track to fit the required space. .
If opting for a curtain pole, passing brackets and C-rings will be required to allow the curtains to operate smoothly and efficiently.

What if I have two sets of curtains to hang?

Layering is a stylish option when it comes to curtains, ideal for blocking out light and adding texture to your décor. For this purpose, a double curtain track system allows you to hang two layers of curtains through two channels.

Which material should I choose for a curtain pole or track?

To ensure durability, we choose high quality aluminium as opposed to plastic alternatives as they can be easily bent and cut to your required size, as well as being reliable.
Curtain poles are extremely versatile when it comes to style and finish, and there is an option to suit every home.

For more traditional décor, a wooden pole creates a rustic effect that will match your home perfectly. Lacquered designs suit a modern interior. High-quality wood and a neutral shine will complement other features in the home.

Metal poles are a great option all round as they suit a variety of home décor styles and are available in multiple finishes.
